Nose Job Procedure

Medically, the term nose job procedure is called Rhinoplasty and it pertains to the surgeries related to the nose. Basically, it is a cosmetic surgery performed to enhance the appearance of the nose. In some cases, it may be performed to repair nasal fractures, or structural problems caused due to injury.

Procedure

Using the process of rhinoplasty, the size of the nose can either be increased or decreased. Few people get the tip of their nose reshaped, while some alter the angle between their upper lips and nose. When planning a rhinoplasty, the doctor takes into consideration factors such as facial features, the skin on the. nose, and the nasal changes to be made. The upper portion of the structure of the nose is the bone, while the lower portion is the cartilage. The surgery can modify bone, cartilage, skin, or all the three.

Based on the way the plastic surgeon makes an incision (cuts through a skin or tissue), the nasal surgery is classified into two types: Open Rhinoplasty and Closed Rhinoplasty.

Open Rhinoplasty

The medical expert performs the surgery without accessing the cartilages and bones of the nose. This is done to ensure the safety of inner parts of the nose. The surgeon makes an incision across the columella. The columella is a thin lining of tissues that separates the nostrils. By making an incision across the columella, the surgeon can safely remove the tip of the skin and perform the surgery. One of the disadvantages of this procedure is that, it leaves a scar on the underside of the nose. However, according to doctors, it is the best option in many cases.

Closed Rhinoplasty

In closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes an incision inside the nostrils and has the liberty to remove the cartilages and bones inside the nose, if required. There is no risk of external scarring in this procedure. The surgeons may also perform an artificial implant surgery in a quest to give a desired shape to the nose, as per the requirements of the patient.

Risks

Like any other surgery, a nose job surgery is also accompanied by some risks. However, they can be minimized under the guidance of an expert. Some of the risks include injury to columella, infection in the nose, bleeding, tiny red spots on the skin, etc. Many people may have swelling and bruises on the nose, that may take months to fade away.

Post Surgery Recovery

The recovery phase begins immediately after the surgery. The splint and bandaging around the nose would be removed in about a week. In the initial few weeks, the patient's face may feel puffy, and the area around the eyes and the nose may have bruises and swelling. However, the puffiness fades away after some weeks. Cold compresses can help minimize the swelling and reduce pain. The recovery period may last for some weeks, or months, depending on the type of surgery. Overall, a person can recover faster from nose jobs, as compared to other plastic surgeries.

Though rhinoplasty has a very high success rate, it would be best to do a proper research to learn about the risks involved. The nose job cost varies between USD 3,000 to nose job USD 8,000. In order to help the patients, hospitals and surgeons come up with various insurance and rebate schemes, so that the patients can get the treatment.
